National Safety Council (NSC) is an apex, autonomous and non-profit organization set up in 1966 by the Ministry of Labour, with the overall objective to generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) among industries at the national level. It has a network of over 6000 members, comprising industrial and business establishments, institutions, trade union organizations and HSE professionals with 14 state chapters and 29 Action Centers. To achieve its objective, NSC undertakes a wide range of activities such as conferences, training, consultancies, national awareness campaigns, publications and periodicals, promotional materials and information resources. Since 1999, NSC has also started promoting World Environment Day (WED) with an active participation from member industries, chapters and action centers. As part of the efforts to promote the WED campaign, NSC appeals to members to actively celebrate WED and help them by providing a variety of awareness and publicity material on current environmental issues. For WED 2005 Campaign, NSC produced the following awareness and publicity material:

II) An information package containing information about the significance and objectives of WED, various ways of celebrating WED and a list of environmental legislations in India

Around 350 industrial organizations from different parts of India took the benefit of the above awareness and publicity material produced by NSC and effectively celebrated WED 2005 in their premises. The WED Campaign has been steadily growing.

The Center for Environment Education (CEE) celebrated World Environment Day through educational activitie. This year, as every year, many of their offices across the country are organized and conducted a series of events to mark this Day. Activities took place in nearly 25 places across India, managed by CEE widespread network of regional, state, programme and field offices. Every year, on WED, CEE involves organizations, individuals, experts and especially children to take part in interesting and thought-provoking activities, which help in raising awareness about environment and sustainable development. Gujarat Council of Science City celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June 2005 in a very innovative way. They arranged a poster exhibition on the theme “Green Cities” to sensitize students, teachers and the general public on the issues of urban areas. In addition a poster painting and a green city quiz competition were arranged for students from Class I to XII. Students and Visitors had the chance to screen puppet shows and skit plays on the theme "City of My Dream". In the evening, a tree plantation around the Science City campus was carried out by the student participants and the visitors. The programme concluded with World Environment Day speech, delivered by the Chairman, Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, who distributed prizes to the meritorious students. Gujarat Science City, working under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat, is emerging as a large scale science popularization platform in the country. Apart from the above programmes, visitors can see IMAX movie "Galapagos", Hall of Science, Ride Simulator, Musical Fountain and many more excitements.

To commemorate World Environment Day (WED) this year, the Tekdi Group is organizing "Earth Events 2005" from 22 April (Earth Day) to 5June (WED). These events are part of the joint celebrations for WED and Earth day and symbolizes an attempt to bridge the time between these two days by initiating Eco Activities.

The Events to be held specifically on WED 2005 are as follows: the launch of a Digital Desktop Eco Calendar on 5 June which will be available on their website at http://www.tekdi.com as a free download. This calendar will feature important Eco Events of the year as well as environmentally important days. As in previous years, their WED activities will begin with tree planting exercises at their branches around the world. This activity which will start on WED 2005 and go on until December depending on local seasons. For example, in India the planting season begins on 5 June and will go on until September. The following activities were carried out in India to commemorate World Environment Day:

1. Releasing of a commemorative stamp on Green Cities by the Hon'ble Minister of State for Environment and Forests, along with a brochure and first day cover wherein the selected painting from the competition of children in the five eco cities (a scheme implemented by the Government of India currently) was printed.

2. Adoption of the Urban Environmental Accords/Green City Declaration by the All India Council of Mayors (a body of 117 Mayors of India) on 5 June 2005 in New Delhi.

3. Organised a Conference on Green Cities(130 professionals from various interest groups participated)/ Children's Summit on Environment (wherein 110 children from five Indian Eoc cities and Delhi participated) and a day long workshop on electronic waste management (65 participants) in India was organised on 4 June as a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, German Technical Cooperation, Royal Norwegian Embassy etc.

4. As a follow up to the above-mentioned activities, an Eco City Expo and a three day Eco city Workshop will be held by the Ministry of Environment and Forests during 3-5 November 2005 in New Delhi with the support of IIT Delhi. This event is expected to bring professional from various walks of life including international experts. A special session for Mayors will be held during the three day event.

Orissa Eco-clubs
The Centre for Environmental Studies in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India has been celebrating World Environment Day (WED) since 2000. This year, they have formed eco-clubs in 4,500 schools in Orissa State, and the students will undertake various activities such as tree planting and clean-up efforts.

This year the Centre is organising drawing and painting competition, which will be launched on 16 January 2005 and an essay competetion to be launched on 23 January 2005. The competitions will be among school students in the state capital, Bhubaneswar, and the expected number of participants is approximately 600.

The drawing, painting and essay competitions will also be organised in 4,500 eco-club schools, mainly in rural areas. The deadline will be 30 April 2005, and the expected number of participants is 45,0000 students! In addition, some 4,500 students have been requested to make scientific models based on this year's theme Plan For The Planet.

On 5 June 2005, a function will be organised in Bhubaneswar and the Honorable Chief Minister of Orissa is expected to grace the occasion at which an exhibition will be organized to showcase selected entries of the drawing and painting competition, as well as the scientific models.

The Centre is in the process of selecting individuals and organisations who have done good environmental conservation work in the State, and on WED itself 30 individuals will be presented with the "Prakriti Bandhu" (Friend of Environment) award and 30 organisations will be given the "Prakruti Mitra" (Dearest friend of Environment) award. The winners of the competitions will also be awarded.

On the occasion of WED, Lokamata Rani Rashmoni Mission is planning a number of activities, which will take place during the week leading up to 5 June. A rally will be organized to raise awareness about the WED theme among the public. A sit and draw, as well as an essay competition will take place to promote the WED theme among children. Seminars will also be held with the members of the youth club and of the science club. In addition, an environmental education CD will be shown in schools.

On June 5th City Managers of Orissa will gather in the Temple City of India Bhubaneswar to observe World Environment Day 2005. Activities on the day will include a workshop and an exhibition related to Green Cities. In the run-up to the day itself there will be a series of roundtable & IEC focusing on urban environment, specifically on the topics of solid waste management, water, urban forestry, green infrastructure and energy conservation, etc. The participants of the workshops include Ministers, Mayors, Secretaries to Government, city managers, officers of urban local bodies, development authorities, planners, academics and international agencies located in Orissa.
